I CAN’T think of anything more daunting than moving to a completely new city at the age of 18.
It’s a transition I would struggle with even now, but to throw yourself into an alien environment when you haven’t even figured out how to properly make toast seems a tough deal.
Perhaps I’m just trying to justify my decision to stay at home to study, which in retrospect feels like a bit like a mistake.
All the experiences I might have missed out on and life lessons I could have learned often weigh heavy on me when I think about whether I should have done things differently.
Still, had I moved away it would have been to Edinburgh, or – even worse – Lincoln, neither of which can boast anywhere like the Art School.
I was lucky enough to hit uni before the old Vic Bar made way for the new, and got to experience that famous chessboard dance floor.
While parties like this Mass Freshers’ week opening can’t really be compared the old RPZ, they are still a vital part of the city’s alternative scene.
This was a unique night, with DJs Sean Hardy and Lil’ Lew spinning thunderous dance music to a crowded room of freshers, many of whom had been on the annual Art School sub crawl for new arrivals since that afternoon.
As an introduction to Glasgow, it doesn’t get much better: a tour of Govan’s less salubrious boozers followed by a raucous party at a legendary venue. Insight and inebriation: it’s what university is all about, no?
