AS far as growing old gracefully goes, few bars in Glasgow are doing it as well as Moskito.
Now into its 15th year, this perennially-stylish basement boozer on Bath Street still has much to recommend, even as most of its peers drift towards irrelevance.
The bar has remained an essential part of Bath Street’s nightlife scene, and on weekends it positively heaves with patrons right up until closing time.
Hip, up-and-coming DJs like the Radio 1-endorsed Illyus and Barrientos provide a soundtrack of tasteful house and low-key disco, which helps no end.
The house duo were one of the highlights at the bar’s recent 15th birthday street party.
A section of Douglas Street was closed off to make way for the bash, which also saw sets from some of Glasgow’s most respected resident DJs.
A coming together of influential club figures had veteran spinner Mash going back-to-back with Tronicsole and Chris Harris – a lineup that rolled back the years and caused the hearts of many long-time Glasgow clubbers to beat a little faster.
Far from being just a nostalgia session, it showed why Moskito continues to be relevant: a commitment to booking the best DJs around means that the tunes are never less than excellent, which in turns attracts cooler punters, which creates good vibes.
The kind of good vibes that keep people milling around, dancing, eating pizzas and drinking mojitos until 3am.
It’s not easy to concoct a winning formula like that, but Moskito’s distillation of great music, food and atmosphere has it just right.
