THE regeneration of the East End continues apace with the arrival of Saint Luke’s, a new gig venue, bar and arts centre in the Calton.

The £1.2 million venue is a stone’s throw from the Barras Art and Design (BAaD) centre, and not far from the West and Drygate breweries – making the prospect of cultured pub crawls around the East End a very real possibility.

On Saturday, the new space held its first major clubbing event as the legendary Sunday Circus took over for a Halloween special.

It kicked off at the unbelievably early time of 5pm, so by the time we swanned in at 8.30pm the place was chaos – all flailing limbs, dodgy dancing and hands in the air.

The church’s café bar, The Winged Ox, was heaving with elaborate costumes – I counted three scarily accurate Ned Flanders, a less convincing cactus, and at least one zombie Alan Partridge.

The main room was a sweaty mass of movement, just about everyone in there losing their minds to Belfast techno kingpin (and Bicep collaborator) Hammer’s muscular, driving techno.

It’s tempting to describe the renovated parish church as the area’s Oran Mor.

Both are grand old spaces that have been scrubbed up beautifully.

But because it’s new, and in terms of what it represents - the breathing of new life and fresh hope into a long-neglected area – Saint Luke’s, for just now, feels more exciting and trumps the Byres Road venue.

And besides, I’ve never seen a DJ spinning techno tunes from the Oran Mor’s pulpit. The East End wins this round.
