Djing legend Laidback Luke has no clue what he will be playing for his Scottish fans when he takes to the decks at the o2 ABC on Boxing Day — but he hopes they might throw some bottles at his head.

The Dutch dance star joked that it is a good sign if the crowd throw some drinks his way when he plays Colours Winter Party alongside D.O.D, Michael Woods and Jay Cosmic.

He said: “I tell people you get bottles and drinks thrown at your head while you’re playing (in Glasgow). Nothing to get upset about, apparently it’s a good sign!”

The producer, whose real name is Lucas Cornelis van Scheppingen, has been a favourite of Glasgow ravers for years. He has headlined the city’s Colourfest and played to sold-out crowds at the now defunct Arches.  And with him returning again during the festive season, it is clear he loves Glasgow is a place he loves.

He especially loves “the raw madness” of the Scottish crowd. He said: “You see that nowhere else in the world, that kind of raging and going full on at parties is really unique.”

As a self-confessed geek, you would expect Luke to be organised when it comes to his set but he admits he loves nothing more than going with the flow.  He said fans can “expect the unexpected,” before adding, “I don’t even know most of the time what I’ll be playing every two minutes of my set. I come in fully unprepared as well.  “Luckily, with my experience and the way I can feel the crowd and quickly adapt, it usually turns out right.”

Not bad going for a DJ whose name seems to be at the top of every festival list from Ultra to Tomorrowland.  Even Luke admits his schedule can be tough and like every other DJ he can feel burnt out by December.

He said: “My year has no start and no ending. To be able to cope with it, I try and live as healthy as possible, and nap whenever I can. I realise the DJ is the life of the party but then I still need to have life in me, which I’ll try and preserve all year around.”

Touring the globe means Christmas is extra-special for the 39-year-old, who is married to fellow DJ Gina Turner.  He said: “I try and celebrate Christmas as typical as possible. Just quiet times with the family as most of us tend to do.  “It’s very special for me to be with the family to celebrate as I don’t get to see them much touring around the globe all year.”

The year drawing to an end means Laidback Luke fans can get their double LLs at the ready — a hand movement which he uses during his sets — for his yearmix.  Choosing the tracks for the compilation, however, could be tough as Luke boasts dance music is so good right now. He even says it is tough to name the DJs he rates.

He explained: “I still need to do my yearmix tracklisting so that’s a tough one.  “Off the top of my head probably Galantis Runaway (You & I) is my favourite track. It’s hard to name someone in this day and age. The world of DJing is an amazing one for me to be part of right now.

“People see me as this amazing technician and skilful DJ. Whereas when I grew up, this was the standard I tried living up to and still am. I absolutely love the art of DJing, all of it, and will do my best to keep telling people about it.”

One of the ways he tells his fans about the music is through social media. Luke is one of the few DJs who actively messages fans on Twitter and Facebook.

He said: “I don’t do it to benefit from it really. As it takes up a lot of time and you don’t see an immediate result of it.  “I just do it to be that guy that I always looked for as a fan, as an upcoming talent. I mean, when a big name responds back to me, or someone I myself look up to, it’s an amazing feeling! I realize I can give that feeling back.”
