Night Moves goes to Vodka Wodka

Columnists everywhere spend the whole year looking forward to its end, when we all get a free pass to look back over the last 12 months and trot out a half-baked retrospective of the year that was. Here at Night Moves we’re no different, so here’s a bunch of things we learned in another year of trawling through Glasgow’s nightlife.

The biggest story of the year was, by far, the sad and inevitable closure of The Arches. The country’s most iconic club went into administration and was eventually shuttered in June.

Since then there has been a shift in power to Finnieston’s sprawling SWG3 complex, which has hosted Pressure and Colours events in the Arches’ absence.

We’ve also witnessed the continued refusal of the big student clubs to rock the boat or serve up anything interesting (with the exception of Kokomo, with its Monday night championing of local house acts), the desperate and terminal decline of indie culture in all its forms, the emergence of Finnieston as Glasgow’s Shoreditch (cemented by this month’s opening of an artisan doughnut shop, pushing the area into territory that is ripe for a Portlandia-style parody), the South Side’s emergence as the New West End, the death of Partick, and – most hearteningly – a steady stream of amazing new producers and DJs from our fair city. DABJ, Illyus and Barrientos and Mia Dora are just three off of the top of my head who have been consistently brilliant in the last 12 months.

Whether you celebrate the bells at Todd Terje, the Tolbooth Bar or in front of the telly, have a super Hogmanay and I look forward to seeing you on these pages again in the new year.
