Is Derrick Carter the world’s coolest DJ? “I’m not at the whim of the record-buying public,” he told Fact Magazine last year. “I just have OG status. I’ve been doing this forever. I don’t DJ because I’ve got a record out, I DJ because that’s what I do. Nothing’s changed, and with any luck, nothing’s going to change. My aim remains the same every week: I come in, blow your party up, and then break out.”

Part of the Chicago house legend’s appeal is that he does not mince his words. While others trot out bland platitudes in interviews and say next to nothing, Carter is happy to tell it like it is.

“There’s obviously going to be a lot of rooms I’m not going to play,” he said in the same interview. “The ones that base their policy on the DJ Mag Top 100, on who had a hit this year, on who’s been the big festival guy this year, all that kind of thing… those generally aren’t places I’d want to play.”

All of which makes him and the Subbie a perfect match, then. The Jamaica Street sweatbox is regarded the world over as one of the best underground clubs on the planet, so a five-hour visit from one of the kings of house music is seen as business as usual.

One final soundbite from Carter that sums up his affinity with our city’s leading club: “I like people who know what they’re doing.” In Harri and Dom, who have been spearheading Subculture for over two decades, he must feel he’s found a pair of soulmates. This party is going to kick off and it’s going to kick off in a serious way, so get down early and witness a master at work.

UVB

Berlin-based Frenchman UVB makes his Scottish debut at La Cheetah this weekend, headlining Code’s monthly techno party. His beats have been described as tribal techno infused with “energetic tones and intricate rhythms” – a combination that has seen his popularity surge of late. The Marseille-born DJ moved to the German capital in 2012 and set to work in the studio, rarely leaving. He played only three gigs in his first two years in Berlin, but after his 2014 song Mixion started becoming an underground hit, all of that changed. He’s now a staple in every respectable techno DJ’s record box, and La Cheetah’s shoebox-sized basement will be absolutely bouncing on Saturday. Support comes from Code resident Nick Morrow.

Gimme Shelter

Hard to believe, but our favourite “cheeky wee bar and club” is turning the ripe old age of nine this weekend. The Duck – which specialises in alternative music and quirky themed club nights – has been flying under the radar at the top of Renfield Street for so long that it now feels like part of the city’s indie furniture now, so it only feels right to raise several glasses in its honour at tomorrow’s birthday party. The plan – not that it sounds particularly polished – is for members of Glasgow’s finest indie bands to be thrown together on stage at random, forming instant supergroups. Of course, the club has previous in this department: in February, a rag-tag bunch of indie icons ganged together at the club’s sponsored danceathon to belt out some covers and raise money for Sarcoma UK. Tomorrow’s affair promises to be a delirious mess, with members of Breakfast Muff, Rapid Tan and Spinning Coin preparing to butcher each other’s tunes in the most loving way possible.

And on Saturday, the highlight of the club’s monthly calendar, Gimme Shelter, celebrates its second anniversary with its last party before moving to Broadcast. To show solidarity with our European cousins, they’ve drafted in Flo and Claude, Munich’s finest freakbeat and and psych DJs. They run the celebrated psychedelic freakout News From the Moon in their home city, so have plenty of experience in spinning prime garage and the weirdest vintage R&B. Residents Holly and Craig back them up, while entry is free for everyone who joins the event page on Facebook - prepare to get trippy.
