Ride Thursdays at Kushion

Students party for free and drinks can be had for the bargain basement price of £1 at Kushion’s notorious Thursday night party Ride. Is it any wonder the kids are queueing out the door and halfway down Bath Street? Inside, with all those dark corners and trappings of a high-end club (G1’s interior decorators have really pushed the boat out with the red velvet in here), it’s a Bacchanalian orgy of undergraduate excess.

Bottles with sparklers fizzing out the top are flying from behind the bar. Behind me, a rugby team are discussing their dedication to “the sesh” in unflinching terms. On the dancefloor, I think it’s a Sia remix causing considerable consternation – plastic cups are being held aloft, their contents soaking the floor and those on it, and everyone’s pointing toward the DJ and his laptop. A boy in a white shirt – all razorblade cheekbones and Peaky Blinders quiff – is doing his best to get close to an impossibly tall girl with a nose piercing and black lipstick. Perhaps the two most interesting-looking people here, they look destined to drift apart until he catches her eye and they get talking. I’m not around to see what happens next: a very, very drunk girl starts telling me a story about her friends falling out on holiday, and with that they are gone. I make a quick escape and on the way home, I think about how I met my girlfriend all those years ago, and how lifelong bonds can be forged from the chaotic and very impermanent scramble of a student night out. I can’t wait to get home and tell her about the couple that reminded me of us.

A fleeting, seemingly random collection of drunken events this might have been, but if at least one of them flourishes into something more than a slurred conversation and a regretted fumble, then it was all worthwhile, wasn’t it? As we draw up outside the flat, my taxi driver is in less philosophical mood. “I dunno, mate, it’s all aboot that Tinder noo, int it?” he says, as I tip him and apprehensively agree.
