We take no shame in admitting that your Night Moves correspondents feel more at home swigging cheap lager in a grotty dive bar than attending black-tie galas hosted by fashion designers. But it’s important to keep abreast of both high and low culture, isn’t it? So last week, in the name of a good cause, we dusted down our tuxedos and joined the city’s chattering classes in the unfamiliar surrounds of The Corinthian: that vast, monolithic temple of opulence that is Ingram Street’s main nightspot.
The occasion was the launch of the Scots luxury belt designer Christian MacLeod’s BlueCM Campaign. Set up to raise cash for Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity which helps young people in the UK suffering from cancer, the campaign has been using selfies – that endlessly effective fundraising tactic – to spread the word about the cause. The death of MacLeod’s cousin at just 22 was the catalyst for the campaign. “You don’t expect to lose someone close to you to cancer so young,” he said when it launched earlier this year. “It was a very sad time for my family and it made me determined to make a difference. I want to help Teenage Cancer Trust and raise awareness so that they can help every young person like my cousin.”
Spread across five floors and 12 rooms, the event was a suitably stylish fundraiser for the campaign. We mingled to a soundtrack of bubbling house beats, our outsider’s nerves tempered by the calming, blue-tinged elegance that underpinned the whole thing. Oh, and the many cocktails helped, of course.
