Without ever having set foot in it, I knew that Chinaski’s was going to be my favourite pub when it opened ten years ago. If you’re asking me – and let’s face it, nobody is – any bar named after the fictional alter-ego of literary boozehound Charles Bukowski (once described as a “laureate of American lowlife”) is an immediate winner. No questions asked. Instant fave.

But that would be like judging a book by its cover, which of course is wrong. So let’s look at the objective facts that prove Chinaski’s is the best pub. First up and most importantly: the beer garden is a thing of beauty. There’s no green space and it’s extremely compact (like the bar itself), but on a hot day, after a long shift in the office, it is an oasis of calm and cold beer just metres from the non-stop traffic on the M8. It’s next door to the Berkeley Suite, so after a few cocktails you can slip downstairs and into a hot, inviting den of sleazy disco and funk (or reggae, if it’s a Thursday and Walk and Skank is on). Speakeasy vibes abound: the bar is signless, with a dark wood exterior. You’ll only know it’s there if you’re in the know. My less-cultured friends swear it’s pretentious, but a) what does that even mean anymore? and b) who says it’s necessarily a bad thing?

Every aspect of this place is refined, cultured, perfect for those who appreciate the finer things. From the framed poetry that makes every urinal visit a literary field trip, to the extensive choice of fine whisky and rum, it’s all about taste. That extends to the tunes: resident DJs include local veterans like Alan Hushpuppy, Craig Moog and Larry Dee. If you haven’t been yet, try it. It might just be your new favourite too.
