IT HASN’T yet gone 11 o’clock on a Thursday night, and already North Street is hoaching with a swarm of excitable bass enthusiasts.

A queue of fidgety, impatient, and eclectic young clubbers shuffles towards the unmarked door of The Berkeley Suite, keen to get downstairs and straight onto the dancefloor. In these pregnant minutes between bar and club, there’s a strange tension that dissipates as soon as you’re inside, the thunderous bass drowning out the roar of traffic on the motorway. For the next four hours, all that matters is bass, bass, and more bass.

“I’ve been coming here for years, man,” a pie-eyed Shetlander called Sam tells me. “There’s nowhere else like it. This is the original, the one. Nothing else comes close.”

Scotland’s premier reggae, dub and dancehall night does inspire a legendary devotion in its regulars. Walk’N’Skank gave them a focal point, and now nights like Dub’N’Grub at Finnieston’s The 78 (which brings together soul food and music in a wondrously enjoyable cocktail), and the Southside’s brilliantly ramshackle Rum Shack and its subterranean dancehall (which is actually very similar to its North Street counterpart in layout and vibe) are giving it the opportunity to extend its reach.

It wouldn’t have been possible without the pioneering work done by Mungo’s Hi-Fi, and their careful cultivation of this fiercely popular – and extraordinarily loud – Thursday nighter.

Tonight, guest DJs are Bann Fada and Cream T, otherwise known as the duo behind Dub ‘N’Grub, Samson Sounds and Nice’N’Sleazy’s Wobbly Social. They’ve been pumping out “proper wobbly tunes” since 1999, so expect a masterclass in obscure dub, dancehall, and roots and modern reggae.
