Super Hans

“We are gonna have parties in this place that go beyond fun and actually get really, really nasty,” says Peep Show’s crack-addled maniac antihero Super Hans upon moving into a new flat. Thankfully, the same ethos has not been applied to his real-world series of DJ sets, which have taken actor Matt King to venues as diverse as Glastonbury, Hackney’s Moth Club and The Sugarmill in Stoke-on-Trent. The Big Beat Manifesto (Hans’ not entirely all-encompassing philosophy that reads “Big Beats are the best, get high all the time”) lands in Finnieston next: King, and his comrades Psycho Pab and The Hombre (Pablo Clements and James Griffiths, formerly UNKLE) will take over SWG3 tomorrow for a chaotic, all-night session of “choonz and jokes”. Whether Danny Dyer’s Chocolate Homunculus, The Hair Blair Bunch, or Man Feelings turn up in a support slot remains to be seen.

Of course, nobody can preview the night as well as Hans himself. “People might have this preconceived idea of what they’re going to get at a Super Hans show,” he declared last month. “But I’ll tell you right now: my set is not all gabba, techno and garage. You will dance, you will laugh, you will turn to one another in disbelief and weep tears of pure joy.” But then he would say that, wouldn’t he?

SWG3 switches back into serious mode on Saturday, when Dutch DJ Don Diablo descends on the venue for a night of the bassy EDM he does so well. Expect to hear the house heavyweight’s horn-heavy Cutting Shapes, which dropped just last week, as well as the results of his recent Rihanna collaboration. This is a producer who just can’t stop churning out bangers at the moment: Diablo is riding a wave of critical and popular acclaim, so house fans are advised not to sit this one out. Support comes from Estonia’s finest Madison Mars and crafter of regal jams King Arthur.

• Super Hans, tomorrow, SWG3, 10pm – 2am, £12

• Don Diablo, Saturday, SWG3, 9pm – 2am, £24.50

Highlife in Havana

The subtle, sensitive way that Glasgow’s Auntie Flo adopts musical tics and accents from across the planet, and uses them to create a cohesive and heady brand of worldly house, is nothing short of a marvel. Tomorrow, the Highlife honcho headlines this special instalment of his cultured club night, which is all about Cuban sounds and, in fact, doubles up as a launch party for the Havana Glasgow Cuban Film Festival. That takes place across the city from tomorrow (Friday) until next Saturday, but for now let’s focus on the music. Flo is no stranger to a Latin rhythm, having played in Cuba twice recently. His set should feature tunes from last year’s Highlife World Series release, which featured the brightest new talent from Havana, as well as Cuban classics and dancefloor-friendly new music from the vibrant Caribbean island.

• Highlife in Havana, tomorrow, The Art School, 11pm – 3am, £5/£7

Dekmantel Soundsystem

The revered Dutch collective Dekmantel are responsible for an underground dance label par excellence and a world-famous three-day festival, held each summer in their homeland. So it’s safe to say these chaps – Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij – know how to make a party kick off. That’ll stand them in good stead as headliners at Subculture, the party of choice for the discerning house fan. They’ll be taking over the booth from start to finish: it’s rare for residents Harri and Dom to be completely usurped like that, so this must be a particularly special one.

• Dekmantel Soundsystem, Saturday, Sub Club, 11pm – 3am, £10

Pretty Ugly’s 11th Birthday

Super Hans isn’t the only media personality making the switch from on-camera to behind-the-decks this weekend. The girls behind superior indie disco Pretty Ugly have talked Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark into headlining their eleventh birthday bash, after witnessing the Dumfries-born journalist spinning at a BAFTAs party a few years back. “You are in for a treat,” they said. “Expect to hear everything from The Boss to Blondie, Madonna to Taylor Swift, Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Pixies, Beyonce to Prince.” And, one can only assume, a bit of the Sex Pistols to round the night off.

For those in dire pursuit of cake, the celebrations needn’t end there. Distil, the fashionable Finnieston bar that helped precipitate that neighbourhood’s unlikely rise, turns ten on Sunday. As such, they’re throwing a bit of a bash and they have Optimo man JG Wilkes on board to provide the soundtrack, with the party moving to the Poetry Club after-hours. Neat.

• Pretty Ugly’s 11th Birthday, Saturday, The Admiral, 11pm – 3am, £6

• Distil’s 10th Birthday, Sunday, Distil, 8.30pm – 2am, free
