WHEN Nelson Mandela passed away in December last year, Glasgow was one of the first cities in the country to honour his life and legacy.

Hundreds gathered in Nelson Mandela Place in the pouring rain to show their respect for the former South African President, laying flowers and candles outside St George's Tron Church.

The first Nelson Mandela International Day since his death will, of course, be more sombre than usual, but there will also be joyous celebration of his life's work against racism and injustice.

None more so than at The Arches tomorrow night, when the British Council's Connect ZA programme, Creative Scotland and the venue present this one-off night in tribute to Madiba.

The headliners are South African "township tech" outfit Fantasma, whose Johannesburg-born rapper and producer Spoek Mathambo was named Best African Act at the 2012 Mobo Awards.

He's also had an album, Father Creeper, out on celebrated Seattle label Sub Pop, and he's backed up a supergroup of South African musicians.

Warming up is Glasgow's Auntie Flo, co-founder of Afro-centric house night Highlife.

Numbers' 11th

ELEVEN years ago, Numbers was a fledgling Glaswegian crew throwing parties for their mates and anyone who stumbled across them.

Now they're a globetrotting clubbing force: playing and promoting across the world, with queues longer than Argyle Street to get in.

For their 11th birthday they're bringing it back to their spiritual home, the Subbie, and - to show just how far they've come - roped Chicago house don Paul Johnson in to play.

Support comes from Numbers man Spencer, who'll be spinning house from throughout the ages.

Festival charity

NEIGHBOURING hipster sister venues Stereo and The Old Hairdresser's host the first Renfield Lane Art and Sound Festival, which kicks off this afternoon in support of homeless charity Move On. There's live art and a host of bands playing, but it's the tasty DJ line-up we're interested in.

The Hairdresser's Exhibition Room will shake to the sounds of reggae soundsystem Argonaut Sounds, versatile turntablist Greenman, rising tech-fluenced DJ Modecon and veteran house spinner Boom Merchant.

All in a one-off venue, and for a good cause.

Judes' pride

LOCAL techno star Rebecca Vasmant headlines this yearly Alternative Pride Party, which takes over Saint Judes on Saturday night.

A particularly juicy line-up sees Madame S, formerly of Utter Gutter, Menergy's Milky, Lock Up Your Daughters' Lucy and TYCI's Heavyflo spinning beats, filthy remixes and out-and-out pop all night long.

l Birdcage presents Alternative Pride Party, Saturday, Saint Judes, 9pm-3am, £7/£10

Parris match

THE Void's summer series continues tonight with this instalment at SWG3. It kicks off before most people will be out of work, and culminates with a raucous set from Chicago's ghetto house legend Parris Mitchell.

A producer of raw, sexually-charged dancefloor anthems, this could get very sweaty very quickly.
