The Fabian Society made waves in the political class when it emerged in 1884: a socialist organisation that favoured a minimum wage, universal healthcare and scrapping the House of Lords, it went on to form the basis of the modern Labour party.

A quick look at the news and we can see what became of that, though.

About to be routed in Scotland, if the polls are to be believed, the demise of Scottish Labour has been brutal and absolute.

In an odd parallel, the upheaval that surrounds Murphy, Miliband and co lately can be heard in the music of The New Fabian Society, a three-piece from Glasgow who make unhinged, almost industrial post-punk that sounds a bit like chaos.

Last week the band launched their new EP Melt at Broadcast, a Sauchiehall Street bar that has become the centre of a new, burgeoning local scene.

Alongside bands like Baby Strange, Future Glue, Secret Motorbikes, Asian Babes and Catholic Action, The Fabians are proponents of a new Glasgow Noir: all are dark, loud and fiercely independent.

The scene mostly revolves around club night gigs, put on by bedroom labels like Dead Beet Records or organised by the bands themselves - all have gigged with each other at some point and it's not uncommon for two or more bands to share members.

This kind of incestuous behaviour makes for the kind of cliquey vibe that is present in all nascent musical movements; whether new Glasgow noir turns out to be the next Nu-Rave, post-punk revival or chillwave remains to be seen.
