A film adaptation of Sunset Song, starring Peter Mullan and model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn, will be released in UK cinemas on December 4.

The much-anticipated screen version of the Lewis Grassic Gibbon novel will receive its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.

Set in north-east Scotland, the 1932 classic charts the life of farmer's daughter Chris Guthrie, played by Deyn.

After her mother dies and her father suffers a stroke, she is forced to look after the farm and care for her family while resisting her father's incestuous advances and seeing her new husband conscripted to fight in the First World War.

Announcing the release date, distributors Metrodome described the adaptation as British director Terence Davies' most ambitious film yet.

Deyn stars alongside War Horse actor Mullan and Kevin Guthrie, who appeared in Sunshine on Leith.

On winning the role in 2012, she said: ''When I read the script I fell completely in love with the character and the story, I'm so honoured and excited to be working with Terence, he's such an incredible director."
