It's home to some of the world's top students of witchcraft and wizardry in Harry Potter and now an insider has revealed that Hogwarts may be a lot closer to home than many realised.

Sean Biggerstaff, who played Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter films, has confirmed that the wizarding school is in Scotland.

Biggerstaff made the revelation on Twitter during a conversation with Buzzfeed's Jamie Ross about a post on a pro-independence blog that questioned claims about the location of the fictional school.

An anonymous comment on the Scot goes Pop blog said: "How can Hogwarts be in Scotland when the village 2 miles down the road is called Hogsmeade? That's an English name, not found anywhere in my country."

However, Biggerstaff was quick to confirm the school is based in Scotland, tweeting: "I know it is 'cause that's why they cut Oliver Wood from the Hogwarts Express scenes after casting me to play him!"

He added: "Made flying to london to film it an annoyance."

However, the news came as no surprise to one Twitter user, who claimed that he knew the school was fictional because its winning quidditch team had a Scottish goalkeeper.
