John Boyega has signed up for the lead role in the second instalment of Pacific Rim.

The Star Wars actor, who has risen to global fame in the role of Finn, will play the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

According to Deadline, the follow-up to the 2013 movie is directed by Steven S DeKnight, based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham.

Producer Mary Parent said: “It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”

Guillermo added: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox.

“The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world.”

John, who is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, has a packed schedule. He will next be seen in The Circle alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, due out later this year.

The actor will also star in the West End in Woyzeck at The Old Vic next year.
