One of her most iconic acting roles was CC in 1988’s weepy flick Beaches, but Bette Midler has openly passed the baton to another actress as a new TV remake of the film approaches.

The Hollywood veteran tweeted her excitement over seeing Frozen star Idina Menzel, 45, taking on the role in the new version, which is set to air in 2017, nearly 30 years after the original was released.

She wrote on Twitter: “Can’t wait to see Idina Menzel as CC in Lifetime’s “Beaches!”” she wrote.

And, showing off her sense of humour, she joked: “DON’T TELL ME THE ENDING!”

The 70-year-old actress played the role of an older Cecilia Carol “CC” Bloom in the comedy-drama flick opposite Barbara Hershey’s character Hillary Whitney.

Following the story of best friends CC and Hillary through their lives, from childhood to middle age, it’s a heartwarming tale that has left many a film fan in floods of tears.

It has not yet been revealed who will play Hillary opposite Idina – who will put her impressive vocals to use with new versions of Wind Beneath My Wings and The Glory Of Love – but the TV movie will be directed by Ring Of Fire’s Allison Anders.

The confirmation of the remake came a week after the original film’s director Garry Marshall passed away at the age of 81.

Idina, who is best known for being the voice of Elsa in Frozen and also starring on Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked, tweeted her joy last week at being able to start work on the remake soon.

She wrote on Twitter excitedly: “Can’t wait to start shooting.”

She then added that Bette “has been one of my all time idols. I hope I can make her proud.”
