ONE of Glasgow’s favourite events, the West End Festival (WEF), has revealed all the events the city can look forward to over the summer.

With over 100 organisations taking part, 350 events in 75 venues across the length and breadth of the West End, #WEF2018 has a diverse range of events, from gigs and ceilidhs to exhibitions and school literary workshops.

Now in its 23rd year, the month-long event will land from May 31 to June 30.

There will be a host of community gala days, with one specifically organised by WEF. The closure of Hyndland Street and use of Mansfield Park on June 16 will allow a safe and friendly event to take place featuring a music stage, kids activities and street theatre. Local cafes and restaurants will be opening their doors to all, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the popular area of the West End.

Ashton Lane will close for a street party on June 3 and family fun day The Big Sunday returns at Kelvingrove Park on June 17, with the talks and authors event programme continuing to feature everything from architecture to wildlife and tombs to language.

A highlight event, an exciting new exhibition will take place at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross Church throughout the festival. ‘Museum of the Moon’ by artist Luke Jerram will see a huge moon featuring detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. There are also ‘Under the Moon’ evening concerts.

A whole Singing Festival will see 18 choral concerts spread around the West End’s stunning churches.

The City of Glasgow Chorus in the epic ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’ will be kicking things off along with the treat of an Indian classical concert at the new Sikh Gurdwara in Berkeley Street. There will also be a celebration of Eddie McGuire’s music and a Kurt Weill evening.

Regular favourites like the local history Guided Walks, the Bard in the Botanics, a full music programme at Oran Mor, cabaret and flamenco nights at La Bodega and plenty of comedy at The Stand will also be making a return.

Free community events will be at the pedestrianised zone in Vinicombe Street and outside the Art Galleries.

The ever-popular Open Air Ceilidh will be on June 10 and there are local gala days at Wilton Street, Maryhill Park, Holyrood Gardens and Mansfield Park - even bowls and pétanque.

WEF is also looking for board members and volunteers.
