In an age where celebrity couples have sickeningly cute conjoined nicknames a la Kimye and Brangelina - gushing about their other halves in interviews and putting on public displays of affection for the paparazzi - it never fails to take us by surprise when we discover a twosome that prefer to keep their relationship out of the public eye.

When the Evening Times spoke to Close to the Enemy actress Charlotte Riley about her marriage to Mad Max actor Tom Hardy - who she met on the set of Wuthering Heights in 2009 - she claimed that he is great with household chores, and was particularly "good at making the bed."

Here is a list of famous people that you may not have known were together.

Charlotte Riley and Tom Hardy

The actor pair who starred opposite each other in a TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights managed to keep their marriage under wraps. Surrounded by close family and friends, the couple wed last year in an eighteenth century castle in the south of France, having been engaged for four years.

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen

Australian actress Isla Fisher met Borat comedy star Sacha Baron Cohen at a party in Sydney in 2002. The couple married at an intimate wedding with just six guests in 2010, six years after they first got engaged. Isla has previously described her marriage to Cohen as "winning the lottery," and even converted to Judaism so that she could wed him. Overall, the pair prefer to be private about their relationship when giving interviews.

Adam Brodie and Leighton Meester

The union of adorable The OC geek Seth Cohen and sassy rich girl Blair Waldorf from US hit show Gossip Girl was almost too good to be true for fans of the two TV shows. The pair first met on the set of The Oranges in 2011, and are said to have started dating in early 2013 - with Adam popping the question less than a year later. There were no Tweets or Instagram photos from their wedding, which somehow makes us love them more for keeping their nuptials low-key.

David Tennant and Georgia Moffat

Former Dr Who star David Tennant married actress Georgia Moffett in a secret ceremony in 2011. Interestingly, they met when Moffet played the Doctor's daughter in a one-off episode of the show in 2008. The pair are heavily committed to keeping their relationship out of the media, avoiding red carpet events, leaving venues separately and trying to avoid being photographed together in public.

Christina Hendricks and Geoffrey Harend

The flame-haired Mad Men star first met CBS actor Geoffrey Harend through her co-star Vincent Kartheiser, who plays marketing executive Pete Campbell. They married in New York in 2009. Christina even admitted that she "freaked out" Geoffrey when she said she would like to start a family with him a few weeks after meeting on a date. Fortunately, the outburst didn't scare him off!

Jason Moma and Lisa Bonet

In 2007 the Cosby Show child star Lisa Bonet married Jason Moma, the man who played Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, after two years of dating. The couple have two children together, Lola, 7,and Nikoa, 6 - along with 26 year old singer Zoe from Lisa's previous marriage to singer Lenny Kravitz, who they are all on very friendly terms with. There is a significant difference in age - and height - between the pair, with 46 year old Lisa's five foot two frame dwarfed by her 38 year old husband, who towers over her at six foot three in red carpet photos.

Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan

This wholesome pair have known each other since they were childhood penpals in London, having met through church camp. After they found success in their respective careers, Mumford and Sons frontman Marcus and actress Carey rekindled their friendship when the band came to Nashville on their United States tour in 2009. They tied the knot a year later, and they now raise pigs and chickens on a secluded farm, and prefer to keep the details of their relationship out of the media.

Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller

These two actors have starred alongside each other in films like Dodgeball, Zoolander and Tropic Thunder, but their marriage is perhaps lesser known in the media. The tied the knot in Hawaii in 2000, and have two children, Ella Olivia, 13, and Quinlin, 9. Christine and Ben keep their relationship out of the public eye to make life for their children as fuss-free and normal as possible, taking turns to help with homework each night; but they do take their kids to the occasional movie premiere.

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman

They might play feuding ex-partners in sitcom Parks and Recreation, but this comical pair are happily married. Megan, 56, who played the vodka-swilling diva Karen in Will & Grace, met Nick - best known for his iconic role as the outrageous Ron Swanson in Parks and Rec - when they performed in a play together in 2000. Finding a shared passion for comedy and theatre, the pair wed three years later. Mutual colleagues have described the couple as 'larger than life,' constantly laughing and joking when they are together.

Natalie McGarry and David Meikle

While this unlikely pair are not married - and worlds apart from the A-List power couples we've had on the list - they get a special mention for their Scottish roots. It's also worth noting that they work on opposite ends of the political spectrum, with SNP politician Natalie McGarry meeting David Meikle, Glasgow's only Conservative councillor, across the hustings at the Scottish Parliamentary elections in 2011. After a joking exchange on Twitter, the pair went for a friendly pint and started dating - moving in to a flat together soon after. The key to their happy relationship, they say, is choosing not to force their opinions on each other - and leaving their campaign leaflets at the door.
