Radio presenter Christian O'Connell has announced he will return to host the Q Awards for the second year in a row.

The Absolute Radio DJ confirmed he will oversee proceedings at the event, set to take place on October 19.

O'Connell joked that he was "in a world of pain right now with the news One Direction are breaking up in 17 years' time".

"I cried myself to sleep last night into my 1D pillowcase," he joked, going on to say: "Looking forward to coming back to the Q Awards stage again, not too often you see a knight of the realm falling over drunk and actually forgetting who they had come on stage to present an award to. More of that please."

This year there are seven categories voted for by readers, including Q best video, Q best album, Q best live act presented by The Cavern Club and Q best solo artist.

The nominees will be announced on September 16.

Last year the big winners were Kasabian, who won best live act and best act in the world today, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Elbow and Paolo Nutini.

Another memorable moment came when Dr Feelgood's Wilko Johnson revealed he was clear of pancreatic cancer.
