Justin Bieber has ousted Adele from the top of the UK Singles Chart with Sorry, and broken a new Official Chart record in the process.

Every track from his current album Purpose charted inside the Top 100, eight cracked the Top 40.

It is the first time a living act has achieved this many entries simultaneously in the Official Singles Chart Top 40.

The closest was Elvis Presley 58 years ago in 1957. He managed a maximum of seven entries.

But the Bieber takeover does not stop there this week.

The Canadian heartthrob dominates this week's run down with three singles in the Top 5: the previously mentioned chart-topper Sorry, Love Yourself at number 3 and What Do You Mean? - currently at number 5.

The last male artist to achieve this feat was John Lennon in January 1981.

Imagine topped the chart, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) climbed to Number 3 and (Just Like) Starting Over reached Number 5 in the wake of his tragic death.

After playing second fiddle to Adele's Hello for the last three weeks, Bieber shifted an impressive 104,000 combined chart sales to claim this week's top spot - including a massive 5.35 million streams.

It is a new personal best for the 21-year-old.

Sorry marks the star's second UK Number 1 single after What Do You Mean?, which logged five weeks at Number 1 in September/October.

Elsewhere in this week's Top 5, Adele's Hello slips to Number 2, and Sax by The X Factor's Fleur East is at Number 4.

Jess Glynne earns her eighth Top 10 single with Take Me Home, which served as this year's Children In Need single.

One Direction climbed from Number 16 to Number 10 with Perfect following their performance on last week's X Factor results show.

Over on the Official Albums Chart, One Direction have scored the fastest-selling album of the year, and a fourth Number 1, with Made In The AM.

It was a close race, but the biggest boyband in the world finished in front of Justin Bieber.

They achieved first-week chart sales of 93,189 to ensure their fifth studio album beat the record previously held by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds long-player, Chasing Yesterday.

Made In The AM is the band's first release as a foursome, following the departure of Zayn Malik earlier this year.

Bieber has to settle for the runner-up spot with his fourth studio album - which has notched up just over 90,000 combined chart sales this week.

Former chart-topper If I Can Dream by Elvis Presley falls to Number 3.

Elsewhere, Kylie Minogue lands herself a 22nd Top 40 album with her festive release, Kylie Christmas.
