The 1975 are having a pretty good year.

The band have enjoyed stunning success around the world and now their second album, I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, has been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.

Hitting the big time in America means the band now have some famous fans and lead singer Matty Healy has been dishing on who is the biggest name in his contacts book.

Speaking after the band’s Mercury nom, he said: “Probably Taylor Swift but she’s probably changed her number by now.”

He joked: “I keep texting her.”

The singer added that it was “humbling” to be named on the same Mercury list as David Bowie, who is nominated for his last work Blackstar.

He added: “It’s crazy just to be invited along and to be with contemporaries we are so in love with, like Skepta.”

Matty, who is the son of TV stars Tim Healy and Denise Welch, went on: “Everyone is incredibly proud. It’s a very nice surprise.

“Making a second record is a difficult thing to do so we wanted to approach it with the purity we had back in the early days.

“We got rid of thinking about reviews and critics and acclaim and that is what is being recognised.”
