Morrissey has given Miley Cyrus his blessing for her cover of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – because she is a vegan.

Miley first began performing the Smiths’ hit two years ago, but singer Morrissey said he had no qualms about her take on the song.

As an animal rights activist and a vegetarian, the 57-year-old explained there were “no cons whatsoever” to Cyrus’s cover.

He told Australian website news.com.au: “Anyone who refuses to eat animals, fish and birds is fantastic by me!”

The singer, who was part of 1980s rock band The Smiths alongside guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, also indicated that there was one more unreleased recording from the band.

Asked about anything left in the vaults, he revealed: “Only a cover of Elvis Presley’s A Fool Such As I.

“I don’t even have a copy of it, but I expect it will spring out one day … when I’m on a life-support machine.”

However, despite the potential for another song to be released, he said that fans should not get their hopes up about a potential Smiths reunion.

“It’s no longer a question of time or wounds, but simply that the issue is now so remote that the question doesn’t make sense any more,” he explained.

The British singer also gave his verdict on the new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, criticising him for eating “Halal-butchered beings”.

Morrissey said he had run for the mayoralty with the Animal Welfare Party, but added: “I could see the pointlessness of stepping in.”

He continued: “The BBC now do not give you news, but they give you their opinion, and therefore they give anyone a very hard time if that person does not suit the convenience and prejudices of the established elite.

“Therefore, liberal educators such as George Galloway and Nigel Farage are loathed by the BBC because both men respect equal freedom for all people, and they are not remotely intimidated by the BBC.

“The mayor was eventually elected on very few votes, and of course he eats Halal-butchered beings, and talks so quickly that people can’t understand him … and that suits the British media perfectly.”
