Rihanna will be presented with MTV’s highest honour, the Michael Jackson video vanguard award, at the Video Music Awards later this month.

The Barbadian singer, 28, has already won the video of the year award twice and is the youngest solo artist to score 14 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

She will follow in the footsteps of last year’s recipient Kanye West, as well as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

At the ceremony Adele will go head-to-head with Beyonce as the singers battle it out for the ceremony’s top prizes.

The British singer received a video of the year nomination for her smash-hit single Hello, while Beyonce was nominated for her Black Lives Matter-themed video Formation.

The women will compete against Drake’s video Hotline Bling, Justin Bieber’s Sorry and Kanye’s controversial video Famous, which features nude waxworks of himself, his wife Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift.

The video, which also features models of Bill Cosby, Donald Trump, Rihanna and Chris Brown, among other celebrities, accompanies the song that is the subject of the recent public feud between Taylor and Kanye.

Adele and Beyonce received the most nominations overall, with Adele picking up eight and Beyonce 11.

Both women will compete with Rihanna for the best female video prize, with Adele nominated for Hello, Beyonce nominated for Hold Up and Rihanna nominated for Work, her collaboration with Drake.

They are joined in the category by Sia for Cheap Thrills and Ariana Grande for Into You.

Kanye and Drake are also nominated in the best male video category, where they are joined by Bryson Tiller for Don’t, Calvin Harris ft Rihanna for This Is What You Came For and The Weeknd for Can’t Feel My Face.

The MTV VMAs will take place on August 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
