When Frank Ocean released Endless, and then Blonde, and then opened four pop-up stores in America and London to give away copies of his Boys Don’t Cry zine, people were understandably excited.
But given the short notice we received before the store on Charlotte Street opened, not everybody was able to get down to it, meaning most can only get a glimpse of what’s on those 300-plus pages through social media.
We also currently live in times with a huge re-sale market, so many of those who did get a copy of Boys Don’t Cry (for free) did so only to sell the copy on eBay – for prices up to £1,000. But Frank’s mum, who you’ll hear on Blonde’s skit Be Yourself, is giving us hope more might be on the way.
Does this mean more Boys Don’t Cry zines will soon become available? How long is “a sec”? We need answers!
The most likely scenario seems to be Frank going on tour and Boys Don’t Cry being available at shows, but given the unpredictability of the album roll-out thus far it seems silly to speculate. Who knows when we’ll next hear from Frank.
The zine features contributions from Frank, Tyler, The Creator, Kanye West and Rick Rubin among others, as well as an interview with Lil B, original photography, and a list of Frank’s favourite films and songs.
Let’s hope there’s something behind the statement from Katonya Breaux.
