For the past decade Americana music has been celebrated in Glasgow every autumn.

Now Glasgow’s Americana festival will mark 10 years in style, with a bumper line-up of acts playing the city from tonight through until Sunday.

It will all kick off this evening at St Andrews In The Square with Scottish songwriter Blue Rose Code, before climaxing on Sunday at the CCA with hotly tipped South California singer Sam Outlaw stopping by.

In-between the event will welcome acts from America, England and Ireland, as well as homegrown talent like Roddy Hart and Jill Jackson.

For festival organiser Kevin Morris, reaching 10 years is an impressive achievement.

“It’s pretty amazing that it’s still standing after all these years,” he says.

“Glasgow’s obviously a busy music city and the fact that we can put on a festival like this is very rewarding. It’s always been something that we’ve taken on a year by year basis, although after we got to about seven years I started to think that we had staying power and that I could start thinking beyond just the next year’s festival.”

This year’s bash will feature 10 shows, an increase over the handful of gigs that comprised the first festival back in 2007. Back then the event had been pieced together quickly, trying to fill the void left when the music promoter Billy Kelly passed away from cancer.

He had been the driving force behind events like Mayfest and Big Big Country, providing a home for roots and trad music over the years in Scotland, and Kevin wanted to carry on that work.

“The first festival was obviously a bit more stressful than things are now,” he recalls.

“It was due to tragic circumstances, with the death of Billy, so it was being put together at short notice. The Scottish Arts Council helped us out with some funding and we managed to put it together, although only over four days. Now it’s up to five days, but the volume of shows has really increased in that time.”

There are many highlights scattered over the next few days, with Kevin delighted to land singer-songwriter Chip Taylor in particular, who’s penned songs like Angel of the Morning and the Troggs legendary classic Wild Thing, and will play the Classic Grand on Friday.

The festival boss is also keen to experience the one-off gig taking place at the CCA on Saturday, where Roddy Hart, Boo Hewerdine and Ben Glover will perform in the round, surrounded by fans.

And there will be two matinee shows on Saturday and Sunday, too, with Hazy Recollections taking over the Glad Café and spotlighting various acts, while Sunday brings roots trio the Stray Birds to the CCA in the afternoon.

“We’ve had a lot of legendary singers appear here over the years like Bruce Cockburn and Tom Russell so Chip feels like the latest addition to that list,” says Kevin.

“Chip’ is an act we’ve wanted to book for several years, because he hasn’t actually played in Glasgow for about 15 years, when he played the Barfly and I was there as a punter.

“Getting him back is a big thing, and there’s so many well-known songs he’s written, like Angel of the Morning and Wild Thing. His brother is also Jon Voight, so Angelina Jolie is his niece. I’m not sure she’ll be there though…

“Then there’s the Scottish acts, with someone like Jill Jackson or the songwriters in the round, so it feels like a nice mixture of youth and experience across the line-up. I’m quite chuffed with the Roddy Hart show, because that’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while, just the whole idea of a Scotsman, an Irishman and an Englishman walking into an Americana festival and playing some music.”

Over the years Kevin has seen plenty of great gigs, but arranging a tribute to one of his musical heroes a few years ago remains a show that stands out the most to him.

“The Gram Parson tribute night was really special, back in 2013,” he adds.

“The Fallen Angels club (that promote roots music) are named after his last band, that introduced Emmylou Harris to the world, and we started planning that one a wee bit in advance, so that it could be a proper celebration. It was a really special night.”
