Incorporating the recognised, the little known to the downright obscure, here are the most essential 100 tunes to come out of Scotland that became my soundtrack for the year.

It's an eclectic journey through alternative rock, dance, electronica, indie, choral, punk, post-grunge, nu-folk and the truly uncategorizable.

75  The Jesus and Mary Chain - Amputation.  The seminal East Kilbride noise-rock combo returned with a tantalising taster of a new LP in March, 2017.

74  December '91 - Things May Not Be As They Seem.  Stirling 'freakfolkster'  produces a sparklingly touching gem.

73  Batteries - Fall-In-Love Club. Cute Devo-ish indie pop from Sci Fi Steven, the front man of punk-pop combo Bis.

72  White - I Liked You Better When You Needed Me. A hooky kooky dollop of dancefloor-friendly electro-indie pop from the Glasgow five-piece.  

71  Adam Holmes & The Embers - People Come People Go.  Edinburgh folksters with an alluring slice of written-on-a-train Americana.

70  Faith Eliott - Pyrite Ammonite​.  Edinburgh singer-songwriter Faith Eliott and a beguilingly harmonic relationship poem.

69 Baby Strange - Nude​.  The Glasgow's noise-poppers got a lot of early hype and are still more than capable of cutely spiky anthems.

68 Vasa - Burst​.  The hooks of Big Country with the edginess of Mogwai.

67 Weatherston - Tonight He Loves Everyone. The young three-piece Glasgow indie combo send a wee cheeky text in form of a towering tune.

66 Holy Esque - Silences. The Glasgow's arty indie rockers seem to have been around forever but just released their debut LP, At Hope's Ravine.   

65 Indigo Velvet - Sunrise.  Sparklingly tropical indie ala from Leith combo.

64 Uncle Judas - Pickin Pockets.  Sounds like classic 70s rough edged rock track..but no..it's fresh.   

63 Codist - Sudden Valley.   Can't believe this is same wise-crackin chaps I saw cover Nirvana. It rawks.

62 Ela Orleans - I'm Your Lucky Star.   Avant garde Glasgow composer-singer as delightfully unpredictable as ever.

61 Hudson Mohawke - Dead Sec.  Glasgow producer as irresistible as ever on a electro-mash game soundtrack monster.

60 Honeyblood - Sea Hearts.   Glasgow grunge-pop duo ignite on this spiky jewel.

59 Meursault - By Gaslight.   From church organ to harmonica squeals it's the return of Edinburgh's foremost nu-folk combo, and they're at their most majestic.

58 Paws - Gone So Long.   Glasgow alterno-rock combo have spiky melodic hooks to spare on this.

57 Lists - Lallan.    Arran tunesmith creates a captivating melancholic atmosphere on this beaut.

56 Redolent - Space Cadet. Indulgent and delightfully eccentric electro dream pop from the Edinburgh indie combo.

55 Man Of Moon - I Run.     A debut LP is eagerly anticipated from the creative  Edinburgh psyche-rock duo.

54 False Hopes - Fade Mountain.    Sixth ferocious instalment from a 2016 singles series from the Glasgow force of punk-inspired nature.

53 Shogun - Unrivalled.   Inspired Paisley rapper is talk of US underground hip hop scene. Says it all.

52 Ikotu - IIII.   Simple, ethereal, downbeat and stunning piano-led instrumental from Edinburgh instrumentalist.

51 Ultras - Napoleon.   Glasgow alterno-rockers sharpen their loud-quiet-loud melodic knives.
