Here is a playlist of the essential 100 tunes to come out of Scotland.

This best of Scottish soundtrack for 2017 is an eclectic adventure into hip hop, alternative, dance, house, electronica, indie, punk, post-grunge, post-rock and nu-folk.

This 100 has been whittled down from my not very shortlist of 300.    You should find the famous, the little known, and some cracking hidden music gems.

Before he had a record deal, Edinburgh born singer-songwriter @CallumBeattieUK had “performed” with REM at T in the Park and signed autographs for Kaiser Chiefs. This gorgeous single is upbeat but bittersweet.

Edinburgh alt rock trio with an exhilirating five-and-a-half minute debut track that twists between soft textures to full-blown raging math rock.

70 Kevin McKay - Crazy About You

Producer and owner of Glasgow Underground with an irresistible disco-house groove that could be classic Sister Sledge.

69  Rachelle Rhienne - Candle

A country-tinged pop sparkler from promising Loch Lomond songstress.

68  Foreignfox - Lights Off, Carry Me Home

Rousingly dark and visceral four minutes of despair and optimism by the Dunfermline five-piece.

67  Aidan Moffat - It's a Lonely Life to Lead

"I've nay taste for tea or coffee, all I need's an open offy". The  highlight from the Scottish national treasure's lost songs and demos collection Songs That Weren't To Be.

66  Mogwai - Eternal Panther

The ripping b-side to the single Party In The Dark where the guitars combust in an unusual (for them) conventional song.

65  Malka - No No No

Freaky Glasgow alt-pop songstress with a cute and horny cut from second album Ratatatat.

64  Sam Gellaitry - Acres

A ethereal ambient beauty from the Stirling producer who accumulated 100,000 Soundcloud followers by mid-2015, while being only 18 years old.

63  Bluebirds - Dog

A brooding and angsty 3.36m with a screaming "there is no God" hook from exciting Glasgow-Edinburgh psyche-industrial punk combo.

62  Future Get Down - End of the World After Party

Edinburgh electro outfit twist a #NewOrder-esque rhythm for their refreshing debut single.

61  Amy Macdonald - Dream On

"I'm on top of the world and I'm on the right track", croons Bishopbriggs singer-songwriter Amy Macdonald who finds her mojo in this irresistible guitar pop gem.

=60 Mogwai - Every Country's Sun

The title track from Mogwai's ninth album has a dark centre, but as is aye the case with these inspired post rock pioneers, it's enchanting, beguiling and ends to early.

=60  Callum Beattie - Miracle

The Edinburgh born singer-songwriter doesn't need a miracle to pen a ridiculously catchy tune.

Loch Lomond tunesmith brings the steel drum back on this reggae-tinged pop gem.

58  Nightwave ft Rye Rye - Awesome

R Rated "blah blah blah blah blah" twistingly distorted dance-pop freakout from the sizzling Glasgow-based producer.

57 Babe - Bit Part

Glasgow-founded band strike gold on this dark falsetto-tinged dark electro-pop track.

56 Siobhan Wilson - Paris Est Blanche

A delicate and evocative French language song married to a beautifully floating piano strand from the Glasgow singer-songwriter.

55 JR Green - Technicolour Native

This seductive lo-fi indie-folk opus was apparently crafted in the humid fever of an extremely green jungle. Or so says the Argyllshire band that perform this.

54 Turtle ft Eliza Shaddad - Blood Type

The Glasgow producer aka #JonCooper produced a dream of a debut album, and this hypnotic electro track was a centrepoint.

53 Alkanes - Persistence To Existence

A searing guitar collision of a debut single taken from debut EP A Different Kind Of Perfect from this Aberdeen-based band.

52 Blanck Mass - Silent Treatment

A barbed electronic opus mashing ghostly vocals with an often intense wall of keyboard fragments from the Edinburgh half of acclaimed electro-drone band F*** Buttons.

51 Double Crown - Heel

Scots electronic combo create a bagpipe-sounding finale to this Chvrches-esque song.
