GLASGOW is set for a dose of P-Funk as music legend George Clinton lands the Parliament Funkadelic mothership in Kelvingrove Bandstand with his dazzling, psychedelic, extra-terrestrial live show.

Clinton has revived the Parliament moniker after 38 years and is back with a new album, Medicaid Fraud Dog. The release follows Funkadelic’s 2014 album, First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate. The last album under the Parliament moniker was Trombipulation way back in 1980.

A producer, writer and performer for over 60 years, Clinton took his first steps into the industry with doo-wop outfit The Parliaments in 1955, rehearsing in the back of a barbershop. Recording as Parliament and Funkadelic, he has revolutionised R&B, blending elements of jazz, rock, pop, classical and even gospel into his productions and developing a unique and easily identifiable style affectionately called P-Funk.

The Parliament/Funkadelic machine had over 40 R&B hit singles – including three number ones – and three platinum albums. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone with freaky costumes and themes inspired by 1960s acid culture and science fiction.

A source of inspiration to generations of hip hop and R&B artists from Warren G, Dr Dre and Lil’ Kim to Scarface, Clinton has latterly worked with Kendrick Lamar.

George Clinton has won a Grammy, a Dove (gospel), and an MTV music video award, and has been recognised by BMI, the NAACP Image Awards, and Motown Alumni Association for lifetime achievement. Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will be performing at Kelvingrove Bandstand on Wednesday, June 20.
