Radio presenter Fearne Cotton has presented her last show for BBC's Radio 1 with the help of famous friends including Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Foo Fighters and Coldplay.

Cotton, 33, is stepping down after almost 10 years at the helm of the station's mid-morning show for "family and new adventures", after she revealed she was pregnant with her second baby in February.

"This is honestly the weirdest day ever," she said as the broadcast began at 10am.

"There's a hashtag on Twitter, #FarewellFearne, which is a bit like I've died," she added.

Many of the artists Cotton championed over the years sent their best wishes on social media.

Sheeran tweeted: "Lots of love to @Fearnecotton and all the support she's given me and so many others on @BBCR1. You are the bestest evah."

Smith shared a photo of him with Cotton, writing: "Sorry its your last day @Fearnecotton! Will miss your sweet voice in my ears every day xx thank you for your support."

Maroon 5 also tweeted: "Always a blast in the @BBCR1 Live Lounge w/@fearnecotton. Thanks for all the love. We'll miss you! #FarewellFearne."

Cotton, who started off presenting the early morning show with Reggie Yates before landing her own programme, could not hide her emotions as she received a number of surprises live on air.

Dave Grohl, frontman of her favourite band Foo Fighters, recorded a phone message, saying: "It's one thing to be a wonderful voice on the radio, someone that has that kind of timing and sophistication and humour and knowledge - but then also to be the most beautiful woman in the world?"

He added: "Usually when you step into a radio studio, you're faced with some people that look like they should be working on the radio. In her case, she deserves to be out of the studio a little bit more."

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin wrote a special song, Gone But Not F Cotton, singing: "I was very, very sad to hear my favourite show would disappear. Have to tell her thanks for the records she played, thanks for introducing us to Lana Del Rey."

Irish rockers Kodaline played a different version of their song The One with the lyrics: "The BBC will never be the same, we're going to miss you when you're gone. We hope the goldfish that we gave you is still alive and swimming on."

James Bay's acoustic rendition of Jackie Wilson's (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher, which was played at the DJ's wedding to Jesse Wood, reduced her to tears.

Cotton, who joked she would get a job as "Dave Grohl's guitar tech", said she was overwhelmed by all the best wishes.

"I'm so utterly blown away," she admitted. "It's been the best day to be an old cow."

Signing off with the Del Rey track Video Games, she said: "It's been the best morning and I'll miss everyone. Thanks for the beautiful send-off. I'll walk away with so many good memories."

Cotton will present some of the coverage from the Radio 1's Big Weekend, which takes place in Norwich tomorrow and Sunday.

Clara Amfo will take over Cotton's show, which features the Live Lounge slot, on Monday.
