The 1980s chart hit It's Raining Men is likely to return to the top 20 at the weekend as a protest against a Ukip councillor's comments on gay marriage.

The song by The Weather Girls has a surge of popularity after music fans mobilised in response to an open letter written by David Silvester who suggested that the flooding which has engulfed some parts of the UK was related to equality legislation.

Figures from the Official Charts Company show the song is already at 21 and it is expected to rise before the placings are announced on Sunday as a social media campaign gathers pace.

Mr Silvester went on to be suspended by his party after his claim that the country had been "beset by storms" since the passage of the new law on gay marriage because David Cameron had acted "arrogantly against the Gospel".

The song reached number two in 1984, while Geri Halliwell's cover version went to number one in 2001.
