THE Killers are the first headline act to be announced for this year's Glasgow Summer Sessions outdoor concerts.

Thousands of fans will descend on Bellahouston Park on the South Side for the music festival, with organisers promising to work closely with local residents and police after trouble last year.

The Glasgow gig takes place on Tuesday August 19 when the US rockers, who have sold more than 20 million albums, will play some of their most popular songs such as Mr Brightside, When You Were Young, Human, Runaways and All These Things That I've Done.

The festival is being staged by DF Concerts & Events - the firm which also runs T in the Park.

Chief executive Geoff Ellis today pledged more top acts when he vowed: "We have some more big acts and dates to announce over the next few months.

"Glasgow Summer Sessions will be one of the hottest tickets of the summer."

The Killers will be joined by English indie rock band The Courteeners, as well as English musician and former Rascals frontman Miles Kane who is best known as co-frontman of The Last Shadow Puppets.

But it is the rockers from the American gambling city of Las Vegas who will steal the limelight.

Mr Ellis added: "The Killers' performance at T in the Park last year was incredible.

"We're thrilled to welcome them back to Scotland as part of Glasgow Summer Sessions, especially with such brilliant special guests in The Courteeners and Miles Kane."

Last year rapper Eminem and US rock band Kings of Leon, as well as Swedish DJ Avicii, wowed crowds during the three-day event but local residents complained booze-fuelled fans used their gardens as toilets while others said the volume of the music rattled windows in high rise flats three miles away.

Organisers want council permission to hold this year's on five nights. A festival spokesman insisted: "We will work closely with the local community and the police."

Festival tickets will go on sale on Friday from 9am online at www.gigsinscotland.com or by calling 08444 999 990, although a limited number will be put up for "presale" today at 9am.
