MUSIC fans helped to smash viewing records following Glasgow's MTV extravaganza.

A total of 2.3million people watched the MTV EMA awards show, hosted by hip hop star Nicki Minaj on Sunday night.

The figures for the Glasgow show were triple that of the previous UK awards ceremony, held in Belfast in 2011, and peaked shortly after 10pm when 873,000 viewers were watching across three channels.

An array of music stars attended the event at the SSE Hydro - the city's newest music venue - including U2, Ariana Grande and Royal Blood.

Nicki Minaj, who bagged two awards and acted as the night's host, wowed the crowd with eight costume changes.

Following the two-hour show, many of the evening's stars went out in Glasgow to celebrate their successes or continue to party with friends.

Ed Sheeran surprised staff and punters at the Pot Still on Hope Street when he came in for a post-show pint.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said hosting the awards would provide a boost to Glasgow's economy.

He said: "In addition to the main show at the SSE Hydro, MTV's Music Week, which ran throughout last week, saw Glasgow's music industry benefit from a significant economic boost with live events at 17 of our most iconic venues.

"The MTV EMA showcased Glasgow to more than half a billion households through MTV's global network of channels; reinforcing our enviable reputation as a world-class music city.

"Hosting the MTV EMA will have had a substantial economic impact on Glasgow, with an estimated £10m boost to the local economy."
