Red Bull Music Academy

THIS week is all about the corporate juggernaut Red Bull's globetrotting Music Academy and its star-studded alumni, who pitch up in Glasgow this weekend for four days of parties, gigs, workshops and afternoon dance sessions.

It kicks off tonight with local bass mogul Koreless at The Art School at Sui Generis, a Latin term for "unique in its characteristics."

Fitting, then, since the lineup also features Spanish producer Pional (maker of "hipster RnB," a genre that you couldn't really say there's too much of kicking about) and Mo Kolours, an inventive Anglo-Mauritian producer, singer and percussionist making exotic, one-off beats.

That one-of-a-kind streak continues through Loops with Numbers, which is tomorrow night at the Gallery of Modern Art.

The all-conquering local crew have transformed the Gallery into a sensory experiment, bringing together music and digital art to create a trippy journey via three-dimensional surround sound and an enormous suspended sphere: truly, something that has never been heard or witnessed before.

Later that night at the Berkeley Suite, Dimitri From Paris and Norwegian space disco producer Prins Thomas - plus some special guests - ditch the art stuff and get down to disco basics all night long.

On Saturday, Detroit rapper Danny Brown takes to SWG3 for an intimate performance.

The firebrand hip-hop experimenter is notably unpredictable, so literally anything could happen at this one.

At the same time, thousands of house fans will be descending on the Subbie for perhaps the highlight of the weekend: a special edition of Subculture with revered Detroit techno veteran Derrick May.

Into Sunday, and the perfect hangover cure awaits at the temporary Sub Hub, high above Buchanan Street.

It's a daytime session, a live-broadcast, open-doors affair with Nightwave, Optimo (who also play a secret set at The Panther Milk Bar on Friday - only 30 tickets were available), Harri & Dom, Inkke, Rebecca Vasmant and plenty others.

The whole thing is rounded off pretty spectacularly on Sunday night at Maryhill's Glue Factory, where Glasgow-based label and artist collective LuckyMe - co-founded by Hudson Mohawke, no less - hosts a night of innovative dance and hip-hop.

The label's showcase at SXSW last week was queued round the block hours before opening, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see similar scenes here.

Montreal house producer Jacques Green, chill Glaswegians Naked and Eclair Fifi, and rapper-cum-performance artist Mykki Blanco wrap up this astonishing four-day feast of culture, at once ignoring the old "less is more" rule and leaving us gasping for more.

Until next weekend, we'll just have to get by, I suppose.

DJ Yoda

DJ Yoda is no ordinary turntable operator.

The man behind the alias, Duncan Beiny, is recognised as one of the world's finest when it comes to the art of scratching and sampling.

His work in bringing underground hip-hop to wider recognition and a dry sense of humour are two of the Englishman's hallmarks.

His latest project, Breakfast of Champions, is his first outing with a live band, so die-hard Yoda fans will want to catch this gig at the Art School tomorrow.

The following night, reggae collective Mungo's Hi-Fi launch their collaborative album with Charlie P at the same venue.

With Kenny Knots and Rubberdub vs Bass Alliance also featuring, it could be one of those nights where the bass shatters a rib or two - no biggie, in the grand scheme of things.

€¢ Mungo's Hi-Fi Soundsystem, Saturday, The Art School, 11pm - 3am, £8
