British stars gave their international counterparts a run for their money on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala in New York on Monday.

Leading the pack of home-grown talent wearing their finest outfits at the star-studded occasion were the likes of actors Matt Smith and Lily James, model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne and James Corden and his wife Julia Carey.

The high-fashion event, known as the Met Gala, sees A-listers from all industries wearing bold designs to match each theme, which this year was The Art of the In-Between in honour of Comme des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo.

Former Doctor Who star Matt and ex-Downton Abbey actress Lily, who are in a relationship, put on a tactile display as they walked the red carpet together.

Lily opted for a corseted white Burberry gown with a full-length skirt teamed with a thick black choker.

Cara caught the eye as she painted her bald head – newly-shaved for a film role – silver, covering her scalp with small gems.

Her look matched her futuristic outfit, a striking printed silver Chanel blazer and matching trousers pulled together with a chunky metallic belt.

Chat show host James, who lives and works in the US, wore a tuxedo while his wife dazzled in a glittering gold gown with floral embellishments.
