Will Young has been cast in a leading role in the West End production of Baz Luhrmann’s film Strictly Ballroom.
The singer will take on the newly created role of band leader Wally Strand opposite former EastEnders star Jonny Labey and theatre actress Zizi Strallen as unlikely lovers Scott and Fran.
Young has appeared in several theatrical productions, most notably the West End revival of Cabaret, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award.
Labey, the winner of ITV’s Dance Dance Dance, will make his West End debut as maverick ballroom dancer Scott, who is ousted from the dance community due to his penchant for unorthodox steps.
Musical theatre star Strallen, who played the lead in Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins production, will take on the role of frumpy wannabe dancer Fran, who catches Scott’s eye following his fall from grace.
Luhrmann’s 1992 romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom, which won three Baftas, was the first of the Australian director’s Red Curtain trilogy, ahead of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!.
The new production features music from the original film, including Love Is In The Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time.
Strictly Ballroom The Musical begins performances at London’s Piccadilly Theatre in March 2018.
