Comic heavyweights at The Stand have come together to raise money to help a fellow funny in need reports Jamie Brotherston.

Glasgow comedian Rhona McKenzie praised the solidarity of her compatriots after Jo Caulfield, Gary Little, Michael Redmond and Jojo Sutherland signed up for a special gig.

Rhona, 37, has osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare bone disease which leaves her prone to injury and in pain.

Requiring a wheelchair for extended mobility, she struggled to get around in her heavy, cumbersome chair. She appealed for a lighter sports chair model but was denied by the NHS.

Whilst performing at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, she faced pushing her chair uphill and was turned away from a train to Edinburgh due to a missing access ramp.

She said: "My mate took the bull by the horns and set up a JustGiving page with a target of £1,000. I thought she was off her head.

"After a day, there was £500 in it. I burst out crying."

With £850 already confirmed, the sports chair is a certainty for Rhona. And the story does not end there.

Comedian Ray Bradshaw suggested a benefit gig to raise cash for the chair and immediately signed up Caulfield and co.

The former Welfare Rights Officer said: "It's a who's who of comedy. It was like picking out my own children. The people we've secured are all headliners, which is phenomenal. They're all off the telly.

"There is a sense of community between acts. It's been really touching. The Stand is my home from home."

Rhona, whose anecdotal act caps off the night on November 30, was thrilled by the support and added: "The fact that the venue and acts that I love have donated their time is amazing."

Whilst all proceeds from the show go towards her chair, her recent inclusion on an NHS waiting list for a similar model means that the cash could also go to the Brittle Bone Society, if she is accepted.

Doors open for the Rhona McKenzie Wheelchair Fundraiser at 7:30pm with an 8pm start. Tickets cost £10.
