A US ice skating star will be hoping to ‘let it go’ when she takes on one of Disney’s most popular roles at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro this month.

For Angie Lien will be the star attraction as Frozen’s tortured princess Elsa during Disney on Ice Silver Anniversary Celebration shows at the city venue.

The 35-year-old, above, who began skating at the age of three, will no doubt to get the loudest cheer from the crowd playing the character famed for the spine-tingling power ballad Let It Go.

And she can’t wait to share her performance and visit Scotland again.

“I was fortunate enough to have been to Scotland before. I was actually there last year with the Magical Ice Festival,” she beamed.

She added: “ I can’t wait to go back because I absolutely loved it.

“The role of Elsa is really fun.”

Through playing snow queen Elsa, who uses magical powers to manipulate ice, Angie hopes fans will see a different side to the Disney on Ice series.

She explained the silver anniversary celebration show has shifted its focus from the prince and princesses, and instead looks at other aspects of Disney.

She said: “We have got all sorts of things in the show because we are a silver anniversary celebration.

“We are going to take you all around the world this time because we are celebrating all the different parts of Disney.”

Glasgow Times:

From an African savannah featuring the characters and music of the Lion King to a deep sea section boasting a performance of The Little Mermaid favourites, the new show is bound to satisfy Disney fans of all ages.

Before Disney, the performer began skating through her mum who coaches the sport.

She explained: “My mum was a figure skating coach and I am the oldest child so I would just kind of tag along.

“I was about three when I got on skates for the first time and started doing little things just once a week.

“By the time I was about 10, I decided I wanted to do competition and I got more heavily into the sport.”

With several accolades to her name including a six-time National competitor, 2003 World University Games Silver medallist and USFS Gold medallist, Angie is one of the few who has experienced the two sides of the sport from competition to performing.

She said: “Competition is so rehearsed. You are training for such a specific time to be at your peak. Show skating is very different because anything can happen out there.

“Everyone is always prepared to do whatever they need to do to make the show the best it can be. It’s a complete different type of training.

“I think that is why I still love doing it.

“It brings out a whole different side of my skating and I am prepared in different ways than I ever was for competition.”

Her love of the sport is perhaps what has kept her going for three decades as she explained, “I love to skate, I love to glide. I love to spin. So all that still interests me.

“ But it has been fun to take on different aspects of skating such as not being competitive anymore, and learning how to make it more theatrical and how to bring out my characters in my skating.

“How I can convey that and give that to the audience for them to enjoy a show. It has been a really good constant challenge in my life and I enjoy it.”

Playing Elsa will no doubt be a challenge for the skater but the character being so complicated is something she loves the most about the role.

She said: “ I love Elsa’s strength and how she has to grow to harness this power that she is blessed with and born into.

“And how her character has to understand it, start to learn it then master it and be able to control what she is going to do.

“I really enjoy that part of it. How can you create this and make the audience understand how colourful she is and how much of a queen she needs to be.”

With her current role offering her career satisfaction, Angie hopes she can continue to thrive on ice.

She said: “I would love to keep going as long as I can and continue performing.

“I love what I am doing right now. I couldn’t be happier.”

Disney on Ice Silver Anniversary Celebration shows run at the SSE Hydro from Thursday, April 28 to Sunday, May 1. Show times vary and include 11am, 3pm and 7pm.
