Verdict: Five stars.

THE very moment you hear the toe tapping lyrics to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a flurry of childhood memories come pouring back.

And that is the magic of the musical which has brought generations of family together over the years.

Taking over Glasgow's King's Theatre until Saturday, October 29, the stage version of the popular musical has attracted a rather impressive star line-up which features Comedian Jason Manford, actress Claire Sweeney and TV's Phill Jupitus.

But what's more impressive is the star of the show which for most will always be the car itself Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The spectacular vehicle takes centre stage as the story focuses in on inventor Caractacus Potts and his two adorable children Jeremy and Jemima.

And naturally there is a bit of a sing song to get the narrative moving.

Manford adopts the father figure role made famous by legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, and despite having only ever seen him as a comedian, I was taken aback but how good a stage actor he is.

He commands the stage with his movement, voice and ability to connect the story to the audience.

He's endearing, funny at points but most importantly he hits the high notes in the songs from the show we have come to know and love.

The children bolster the show as supporting cast while dad Grandpa Potts brings the comedy factor. He is likeable, funny and connects well with the audience.

The family find themselves on a bit of an adventure after acquiring the magical car which results in them having to fight evil.

That evil comes in through Claire Sweeney’s Baroness and Phill Jupitus Baron. The unlikely duo play the baddies perfectly and camp up the role to give plenty of laughs.

The big names perhaps get more involved in the narrative and song than what we saw in the original film, but it adds a new dimension to the story.

And it is a story that is still clearly loved by the audience who have never been livelier at the King’s Theatre which proves just how loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is.

The scary childcatcher does not disappoint either. Played by Jos Vantyler, he is bound to even leave the adults with a few nightmares.

The show is a family favourite and is a must for any parent wanting to introduce the story to their child.

The staging and technology used throughout is on a grand scale but the vintage songs prove that a traditional musical never goes out of style.

Catch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at The King’s Theatre until Saturday, October 29.
