City sure to star in stage awards

Glasgow-based productions lead the way in nominations for prestigious Scottish theatre awards.

Over 30 different companies are recognised in the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS).

They range from the National Theatre of Scotland with 15 nominations, to first time nominees - Grinagog, Iron-Oxide and Birds of Paradise.

And theatre created in Glasgow is certain to be represented on the winner's podium.

The Citizens' Theatre has six nominations for its staging of Crime and Punishment, while Vox Motus has nominations for children's theatre piece, Dragon, co- produced with the NTS.

Vanishing Point, based at Glasgow's CCA in Sauchiehall Street, has picked up four nominations for The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler.

And also on the shortlist is Oran Mor's A Play, A Pie and a Pint, with three nominations, including Johnny McKnight comedy drama, A Perfect Stroke.

Other Glasgow-based companies nominated include Rapture Theatre, the Arches, Birds of Paradise and Random Accomplice.

Two children's shows, Dragon and Huff have received eight nominations across six categories, including Best Production.

Shetland actor Rebecca Benson and Blythe Duff are both shortlisted for Best Female Performance for Let the Right One In and Ciara respectively. Also nominated are Elicia Daly for The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler and Adura Onashile in HeLa.

Nominations for Best Male Performance include Adam Best for Crime and Punishment, Sandy Grierson's portrayal of Ivor Cutler, Jimmy Chisholm in The Collection and Scott Reid in A Perfect Stroke.

The Best Director nominees include Dominic Hill, Stewart Laing, Orla O'Loughlin and John Tiffany.

The awards ceremony will be at the Citizens' Theatre on June 8.
