Cyndi Lauper's Broadway musical Kinky Boots will be strutting its stuff to the UK when it opens in the West End later this year.

The Girls Just Want To Have Fun singer wrote the music and lyrics for the show - based on the 2005 British film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, inspired by the true story of a shoe factory that faces closure following the death of its founder until it finds new life in fetish footwear.

The musical - which scooped six Tony awards for its Broadway run in 2013 - will open on September 15 at London's Adelphi Theatre, with previews from August 21.

Lauper teamed up with playwright Harvey Fierstein and director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell to adapt Kinky Boots for the stage.

She said: "I found it fantastic and I think I'm a better songwriter for it, too.

"I like to make people laugh. I like to make people think and cry. I like the characters to have depth and Harvey writes them with depth."

Casting for the West End production is yet to be announced.

Mitchell said: "I am delighted to see this big-spirited musical arrive in London. Kinky Boots is very close to my heart, and I am really looking forward to staging it here with a British cast."

Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig added: "We are thrilled and deeply honoured to be bringing Kinky Boots back home to British shores, where this inspirational story is set. The show is big-hearted and filled with joy and we trust that it will be warmly embraced by audiences in the UK."
