Verdict: four stars.

The character of Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard could only ever be played by one woman...the late Whitney Houston.

Or so I thought.

X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke hit the high notes in the big ballads; pulled off the diva attitude and coated the performance with sassy moves to rival the likes of Beyoncé.

Instantly, the singer made the part her own in the musical version of the hit movie which held its Scottish premiere at The King's Theatre in Glasgow tonight.

Kicking off the show literally with a bang, Alexandra made a fiery entrance to Queen of the Night.

Quickly the audience were taken aback by her voice and just how powerful it is live.

The Whitney hits quickly followed including Million Dollar Bill, How Will I Know and the Greatest Love of All.

And the love story kicked in with impressive sets too boot.

Burke instantly shook off her reality TV star status proving she is a triple threat who can sing, act and dance.

Backed by the equally vocally impressive Melissa James who played sister Nicki Marron, Burke didn't need a spotlight to shine on stage right from the get go.

The supporting cast added humour and warmth to the musical, giving the love story with the big soundtrack a new dimension.

The show just works because of Whitney's impressive back catalogue, and unlike any other artist themed musicals (I'm thinking Mamma Mia), the plot is not manipulated, it comes across as a love story we can buy into.

The leading man Frank Farmer played by Stuart Reid took his role even more serious than perhaps Kevin Costner did in the movie.

It resulted in a chemistry between him and Burke that only peaked too few times, and I have to say he only grew on me as the show went on.

This musical is a must for any Whitney Houston fan and anyone who loved the movie.

Burke does not disappoint and it is clear the audience - which included Scotland's own songstress Susan Boyle - felt the same way giving her a standing ovation.

Her rendition of that song - I Will Always Love You - was simply outstanding.

And it is clear from this performance that Burke is a girl with a big voice who could easily have a career to rival the woman who inspired the Bodyguard story, Whitney Houston.
