Male presenters are to be banished from BBC Radio 1 for 39 hours this weekend to celebrate International Women's Day.

The station's shows will feature only female hosts from 7pm on Friday when Annie Mac goes on air, until 10am on Sunday when Gemma Cairney winds up her programme.

Radio 1 initially lined up two 12-hour takeovers but programme bosses have now extended it by a further 15 hours to give an unbroken line-up of women.

It ties in with International Women's Day which will be marked on Saturday and among the featured presenters will be Annie Nightingale, 73, who is the station's longest serving broadcaster.

Head of programmes Rhys Hughes said it was "a 39-hour celebration of our female presenter talent".
