Let's face it...there are not many dramas filmed in Scotland that we can be proud of.

Granted I am an American TV junkie so maybe my judgement is slightly clouded but I know I have cringed at what I have seen in the past.

That was before I watched the pilot episode of Outlander at the Scottish premiere in Glasgow's Grosvenor Cinema tonight.

Minutes in, I am thinking who knew my country was so beautiful? The opening scenes feature a stunning rugged glen...and believe me girls that's just the start of it...the scenery gets a lot better when Jamie Fraser, played by hunky Scot Sam Heughan, makes his screen debut.

Then I'm hooked already on the fact it is a period drama since I shamefully learn my history through watching the tele - I can't be the only one?

But better than all that is the Outlander theme tune, I am not going to lie using The Skye Boat song was a stroke of genius...it almost brought a wee tear to this Scottish lassie's eyes.

Filmed here and based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, the opening scenes of Outlander introduce us to the character of Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe, who has just returned from working as a nurse in World War II. She decides to take a holiday in The Highlands with her husband Frank. We learn that Frank is an historian and it's his interest in history that perhaps lands Claire in the predicament she later finds herself in, which ultimately kick starts the Outlander plot.

Claire and Frank take a trip to watch a ritual by locals which can only be described as witchcraft. "I wasn't meant to be here. I was an unwelcomed voyeur to something ancient and powerful," Claire narrates.

She returns to that same spot later without Frank to collect ironically Forget Me Not plants and it is at this spot she is transported from 1945 to 1743.

This is where she falls into trouble with red coat baddie Black Jack Randall threatening to rape her.

But lucky for Claire, still adjusting to her new surroundings, she is rescued by a Scottish solider.

She then meets obvious love interest Jamie, playing nurse to his injured arm.

What I instantly like about this show is that Claire does not play the female victim. Given the historical setting, she should know her place but Claire is strong-willed, ballsy and someone you can admire.

Graham McTavish even jokes, "I have never heard a woman use such language in my life," as she continues to speak to the soldiers with profanity that shocks.

It's her story and it is so rare to see a woman in the heroine role leading the plot - perhaps that is down to author Diana Gabaldon.

This show already has a huge worldwide fan base, it has the same buzz that Twilight, The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones created, and it makes me proud to be Scottish.

And in a similar vein to Claire's final remarks in the pilot episode, I know my journey with Outlander has only just begun...I'm hooked.

All eight episodes of the first season of Outlander will be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video from March 26.

The remaining episodes will be shown on April 5 hours after their US premiere.
