Fifty Shades Of Grey star Jamie Dornan has said he is going to flee the country to avoid the hype around the controversial film.

The cast of the big screen adaptation of EL James' hit erotic novel were greeted by adoring fans - along with protesters who say the film promotes abuse - at its London premiere in Leicester Square last night.

Appearing on tonight's Graham Norton Show, Dornan said: "I am fleeing the country. I am certainly not going to stand in Leicester Square without my shirt, asking people if they enjoyed the movie! I am keeping a low profile."

Dornan, who plays suave businessman Christian Grey who seduces college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) into an S&M relationship, said it was "a relief" now that the film had been released.

The worldwide fame is a long way from his early days in Hollywood where he shared a flat with another struggling actor - Eddie Redmayne.

He said: "We had long stints when we tried and failed to work. We were really unemployed and really single. We did nothing - it was really bleak.

"We used to have the same agency and they would send three scripts to Eddie and 26 to me, which just meant there were 23 more jobs I tried and failed to get."

The 32-year-old actor, who shot to fame in BBC crime drama The Fall, met fans at the premiere and revealed his wife would not be queuing up for cinema tickets.

He said: "She hasn't seen the film and I don't think she will, to be honest. I'd understand if she didn't want to."

He added that there could be a few embarrassing moments for his other loved ones, too. "I think there's some stuff where my family and friends will never have seen that side of me before, but it wasn't enough to make me not want to do it," he said.

He also posed for pictures with his co-star Johnson, who braved the cold in a floor-length white Yves Saint Laurent gown with a plunging neckline.

Dornan confirmed he had been a perfect gentleman during sex scenes with Johnson. "I'd be a really awful person if I didn't cover her up after they called cut and she's naked. I'm not the kind of guy who could just leave her," he said.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson also attended with actor husband Aaron, as did writer James.

The author said she found handing over control to Taylor-Johnson "very, very difficult".

She said: "I had to honour the fandom and there were some ideas where I thought, 'No, the Red Room does need to be red', so I fought for the story because of the fans.

"In any creative environment you're going to get discussions."
