SHE has interviewed some of the world's most important and awe-inspiring people for Desert Island Discs.

But Scots presenter Kirsty Young admits her scariest moment came in the Great British Bake Off tent.

Kirsty, 44, is taking part in a Sport Relief special of the hit TV show, in which amateur bakers attempt to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

"In my house we're such fans of the Bake Off that 'The Tent' has taken on an iconic status," she smiles. "When I walked in I went weak at the knees."

Kirsty, who also fronts the BBC's long-running Crimewatch programme, made gingerbread for the signature round, banoffee pie for the technical session and her showstopper is (without giving too much away) "something chocolate that represents my job".

She admits she was nervous about showing off her baking to Paul and Mary, who have a reputation for being tough on fallen souffles and soggy-bottomed pies, adding: "I have made banoffee pie before but I made it the cheat's way with my gorgeous daughter Iona."

Kirsty, who is married with two daughters, has presented Desert Island Discs since 2006. Previously, she presented the news on Channel Five, and her career began in Scottish Television in Glasgow.

Originally from East Kilbride, she spent most of her childhood in Stirling.

In Kirsty's episode of The Great Sport Relief Bake Off, which airs on BBC Two on Tuesday, she competes against actress Jane Horrocks, best known for her appearance as dizzy secretary Bubbles in Ab Fab, Olympic champion long-jumper Greg Rutherford and Dancing on Ice judge Jason Gardiner.

Other celebrities taking part in the series, which starts on Monday and runs until Thursday, include cyclist Victoria Pendleton, impressionist Alistair McGowan, Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes and cricketer Michael Vaughan.

Singers Michael Ball and Jamelia, actresses Doon Mackichan and Samantha Bond, former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films, join writer and broadcaster Emma Freud - wife of Comic Relief boss Richard Curtis - and Johnny Vaughan to complete the star-studded line-up.

REGULAR presenter Sue Perkins will be without her usual sidekick Mel Giedroyc, but for the first time will be joined by guest hosts Omid Djalili, Ed Byrne and Jo Brand. Jo is a veteran of the celebrity Bake Off having taken part in a previous Comic Relief special.

The series will also follow Olympic gold-winning boxer Nicola Adams as she visits Comic Relief- funded projects in South Africa.

All 16 celebrities admit they were nervous about taking on the challenges of the Bake Off.

Helen Skelton admits she is "absolutely rubbish at baking" adding: "All my friends and family laugh at anything I do in the kitchen, so I thought this might be a chance to redeem myself. I wished I'd practised more beforehand."

She adds: "When they said to me 'you've got to make a pizza' I thought they meant just put the toppings on a pizza.

"I didn't realise they meant make the dough and everything."

Michael Ball says: "I would say that my baking ability is best described as a keen amateur, messy, somewhat over ambitious but getting there.

"My favourite part of the day was looking into Mary Berry's eyes as she removed a metal skewer from my hand as I was sticking into a working mixer, telling me 'we don't want to have an accident now do we!'

The fundraising Sport Relief weekend takes place from March 21 to 23 with members of the public invited to run, swim or cycle in the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Games, with events taking place all over Glasgow.

It's one of the UK's biggest fundraising events, organised by Comic Relief, and since 2002, has raised more than £195 million.

The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world.

From David Walliams' Thames swim to Eddie Izzard's 43 marathons in 51 days, Sport Relief has a unique history of brave celebrities taking on gruelling physical challenges to raise cash and change lives, and Sport Relief 2014 will be no exception.
