He will front a one-off show in which household name stars will be on stage to celebrate the artists who inspired their own careers.

The programme, Bruce Forsyth's Hall Of Fame, is to be screened on a Saturday night later this year.

Sir Bruce announced in April that he was leaving Strictly after a decade as host, with his co-host Tess Daly teaming up with Claudia Winkleman for the next series which is expected to launch in September.

The BBC described the show as "a chance for today's stars to pay homage to their heroes and find out what it's like to perform as their showbiz legends would have done".

They will take it in turns to impress viewers with show-stopping performances.

Sir Bruce, 86, said: "As soon as I heard about this, I thought it was a wonderful idea. I can't help being excited."

Executive producer Jane Lush - who helped to launch Strictly when she worked for the BBC - said: "I couldn't be more excited to be working again with Sir Bruce exactly 10 years since we first embarked on the Strictly Come Dancing adventure together."
