GLEE actor Mark Salling who was convicted of possessing child abuse images has died of an apparent suicide, according to reports.

The star's body is said to have been found on Tuesday in the Los Angeles River near Sunland where he had a home.

Salling, 35, was awaiting sentencing after entering a guilty plea to possession of child abuse images.

He had already made a suicide attempt last summer according to a report.

The former Glee star had entered his plea at a Los Angeles court in December.

At the time, he told the judge he was on medication for depression.

The actor reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in October as opposed to the maximum 20-year sentence the charge carries.

Salling, originally from Texas, was previously sued by his ex-girlfriend Roxanne Gorzela for sexual battery.

The case was settled when Ms Gorzela dropped the sexual battery claim.

Salling shot to fame playing Noah 'Puck' Puckerman in the hit FOX series Glee.

He first appeared in 2008 and was a regular until season five.
