n SEPTEMBER 4, 2010: Two people were sacked after a 40ft weighbridge, worth £10,000, was stolen from a Glasgow City Council depot, using a council vehicle, in Carntyne.

1912: The first London Underground train crash left 22 injured.

1957: In the US, black students were barred from an all-white school in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1964: The Queen opened the Forth Road Bridge.

2000: After 19 years, the final women peace protesters left Greenham Common.

1972: At the Munich Games US swimmer Mark Spitz became the first person to win seven Olympic gold medals.

1976: Paul Wilson scored twice as Celtic drew 2-2 with Rangers at Parkhead in the league. Derek Johnstone and Derek Parlane netted for Rangers.

2000: Donald Trump offered $1million for a 'battle of the sexes' tennis match between John McEnroe and Venus Williams, above – she turned down the offer.

1955: Kenneth Kendall became the first TV newsreader to appear on screen.

2001: Actress Kate Winslet split from her film-maker husband Jim Threapleton.

2006: Australian Steve Irwin, above, the Crocodile Hunter, died after being struck by a stingray.
