THE January sales, queuing to get into the pictures, shopping for food, dancing the night away and enjoying the festive lights in George Square – all images that sum up Glasgow.

And all perfectly on show in a series of vintage photographs in the 2013 Evening Times calendar.

The Times Past calendar, which is now on sale at our offices in Renfield Street, captures 14 brilliantly evocative images from our photographic library, one of the largest in Scotland.

The earliest – of a typically busy shop front display at a Glasgow tobacconist and newsagent – dates to the earliest years of the last century. There is also a great shot from about 1931 of Charlie Chaplin fans waiting in line to see his latest film, City Lights, at the Coliseum cinema in Eglinton Street.

From before 1926 there is a striking photograph of St Enoch Square, complete with St Enoch Parish Church and the ornate Subway building.

The scene has changed radically over the last 86 years, as you would expect, but you can still recognise some of the buildings today.

On other months you will see photographs of the Queen Mary, a tram bottleneck in the city centre, and a 1950s couple covering up against the sun while relaxing on a beach.

And our cover star? That's a grimy chimney sweep, pictured in 1942, clutching his ration book – and a bar of soap.

As with last year's calendar, we have chosen to support the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice Fund – and we are happy to do so again this year.

Half of all the profits from the calendar will go towards the £15million needed to build a new facility once the existing hospice leaves its Carlton Place site in the city centre.

The Evening Times-backed Brick By Brick appeal is a highly worthwhile cause, with the aim of building a palliative care facility in Bellahouston Park.

The calendar will put some brilliant pictures from yesteryear on your wall all throughout 2013, as well as helping a first-rate cause.

All this for just £6, if you buy it in person at our offices. It can also be ordered online or by telephone. Whichever method you use, make sure you order your calendar in time for Christmas!

l The calendar costs £6 if bought in person from our reception at 200 Renfield Street, Glasgow, G2 3QB, or £7.50 by post (including UK p&p). To order call 0141 302 6210 or see our website at: www.eveningtimes.co.uk/calendar
